Biography:
Dr. Adekoya, at various times, had worked in both law firms and corporate organisations in Nigeria before joining the academia. For five years, he was an Assessor in Business Law with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN). He joined the services of the University as a lecturer in the Faculty of Law. He had served as Assistant Coordinator (Academics) of the Diploma in Law Programme of the University, Secretary of the Department of Public Law and Jurisprudence and Sub-Dean (Postgraduate). He pioneered the establishment of the Olabisi Onabanjo University Law Clinic together with the introduction of Clinical Legal Education(CLE) and has been the Coordinator from inception and later of the Faculty’s ClinicalEducation Programme to date.
The Law Clinic, with Dr. Adekoya as Coordinator and in collaboration with Network of University Legal Aid Institutions (NULAI, Nigeria) has won three grants: Pre-trial Detainees Project – has theobjective of improving access to justice for awaiting-trial detainees in Nigeria and was funded by Justice for All (J4A), with Network of University Legal Aid Institutions (NULAI) as project implementation partners (under the project, both equipment and fund was donated to the Clinic (duration: 1st January – 30th September, 2014, but was extended to December, 2014 with additional grant); Freedom of Information Outreach Project –has the objective of promoting effective use of the Freedom of Information Act, 2011. It was funded by Open Society Foundations with Network of University Legal Aid Institutions (NULAI) as project implementation partners. In executing the project, the Clinic carried out outreaches in five communities of Irolu-Remo, Ijesha-Ijebu, Iperin, Oru and Ilaporu in 2014 in order to create awareness about the Freedom of Information Act and its utilisation (duration: April – October, 2014); Freedom of Information Street Law Project – the objectives are to build the capacity of community-based groups to enable them effectively use the Freedom of Information Act, and the promotion of participation of community groups in governance through increased awareness and knowledge of the Freedom of Information Act. The project was funded by the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF), with Network of University Legal Aid Institutions (NULAI) as project implementation partners. The Clinic carried out street law training for the communities of Awa and Mamu (duration: December, 2014 – January, 2016). Dr. Adekoya, as Clinic’s Coordinator, was the contact person for all the projects and he spearheaded the execution of the projects.
He has served in several Committees of the University. He was a member of the three-man Network of University Legal Aid Institutions (NULAI, Nigeria) delegation led by its President, Professor Ernest Ojukwu, SAN on a Clinical Legal Education Tour and Teacher Training/Advocacy visit to the Law Faculties of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi and University of Ghana, Legon, Ghana, from 12-15 August, 2012.He was a member, Network of University Legal Aid Institutions (NULAI) Clinical Education Curriculum Review Committee, which reviewed the 2006 Clinical Legal Education Curriculum for Law Faculties/Law School Clinics, in 2012.
He has served as an External Examiner to Departments and Faculties of Law in overseas and Nigerian Universities. He has attended many local and international conferences/workshops/dialogue, where he presented papers on access to justice and clinical legal education at University of Alexandria, Egypt; Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia and Nigeria among others. He served on the Editorial Board of reputable Journals. He has authored several articles and contributed to books and loose-leafs.
