CONDITIONS FOR THE AWARD OF POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMAS AND DEGREES

Courses

Courses in Postgraduate study require performance of high quality. The Ph.D. overall workload shall be minimum of 42 credit units beyond the Master Degree of which 12 units are for the thesis 24 for course work; and 6 credit units for seminars. To remain in good standing in any of the regular postgraduate programmes, a student must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0. Once the CGPA is less than 2.5 at the end of the session, the student would be asked to withdraw. The student’s progress will be reviewed each semester by the respective departments.

Thesis

A thesis proposal must be filed with the Postgraduate School 14 weeks prior to expected graduation. This proposal must outline the proposed research in reasonable details and must be approved by the Students Advisory Committee.  The student is expected to present two seminars:

  1. On his/her thesis proposal before proceeding on the field work; and
  2. Post field seminar on completion of his/her and prior to final oral examination.

PREPARATION OF THESIS/DISSERTATION

All thesis/dissertation and project reports must contain:

  1. An abstract
  2. Introduction
  3. Literature review
  4. Materials and Methods
  5. Results
  6. Discussion
  7. References
  8. Appendices (if any)

It should be typed on A4 typing sheet bound with indigo blue with golden inscription and four copies must be submitted.

SUPERVISION OF THESIS/DISSERTATION

Supervision of thesis/dissertation shall be done by an academic staff of the level of senior Lecturer and above who must possess a Ph.D.

EXAMINATION OF THESIS/DISSERTATION

Thesis/Dissertation shall be examined by a panel of examiners composed of the following:

  1. Head of the Department (Chairman)
  2. The Supervisor
  3. The Deputy Provost Postgraduate School or any other representative nominated by the Postgraduate School.
  4. The External Examiner who must be at least a Senior Lecturer
  5. Supervisor from cognate Faculty

The candidate is required to take a final oral examination and offer and ensure that:

  1. The thesis has been completed and submitted to the Postgraduate School;
  2. A suitable examiner has been nominated by the student adviser and appointed by the Postgraduate School; and
  3. All other requirements for the degree have been satisfied. Examination will focus on the thesis but not limited to it.
