Historical Background
The Olabisi Onabanjo University is an autonomous public and non-residential institution established by the Ogun State Government in 1982, providing higher education in the Humanities, Sciences and Technology and encouraging the advancement of learning in all the major spheres of human endeavor. The Planning Committee for the establishment of Olabisi Onabanjo University was inaugurated on 9th January, 1982 by the then Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Chief Akin Ogunpola, with Professor Akin L. Mabogunje as Chairman. The Committee submitted its report on 16th March, 1982 and on July the same year, the defunct Ogun State House of Assembly passed the bill establishing the University into law. Thus the University became a reality with the law formally establishing it. Consequently, the appointments of the Chairman and members of the Provisional Governing Council, including the first Vice Chancellor, were announced and the Council was inaugurated on September 28, 1982.
On 31st January, 1983 the University opened its gates to its first set of students numbering a little over 500.
The University is a multi-campus institution with its main campus situated at Ago-Iwoye in Ogun State, in the Western part of Nigeria. Presently, there are eleven Faculties and two Colleges offering well over a hundred undergraduate and Postgraduate courses in relevant programmes, some of which include Medicine, Law, Social and Management Sciences, Pure Sciences, Agriculture and Arts.
The Institution is endowed with highly trained and dedicated staffs who have contributed in no small measure in boosting the image of the University, both within and outside the country. This has contributed to the early accreditation of many of the programmes being offered by the institution.
After sixteen years of sojourn on the temporary sites at the University Annex, Ijebu-Igbo, and the mini campus, Ago-Iwoye the University eventually moved some of its academic staff and students of two Faculties to its main campus in Ago-Iwoye located on a 3,141 hectares of land along Ago-Iwoye-Irolu-Ilisan Road on 3rd August, 1998. The Postgraduate School followed in November, 1998.
This movement has, indeed, completed the initial step taken by Professor Olatunji Yinusa Oyeneye on September 14th, 1995 in moving the University central administration to the Permanent Site, Ago-Iwoye, barely five month after assuming duty as the 3rd Vice-Chancellor of Ogun State University.
The Faculties of Social and Management Sciences and Arts and the Postgraduate School are based on the Main Campus, while the Faculties of Education, Science, Basic Medical Sciences, Law and the College of Agricultural Sciences are on the Mini Campus, Ago-Iwoye and the Obafemi Awolowo College of Health Sciences is at Sagamu.
